The second National Floodplain Management Conference ‘Building a Flood Resilient Australia’ was held in Brisbane from Tuesday 19 to Friday 22 May 2015.

 

The Floodplain Management Association Conference has been held annually for over 50 years and is the most respected floodplain industry event held in Australia. Following the success of the FMA’s first National Conference at Tweed Heads in 2013, the 55th FMA Conference was again a National Conference, this time held in Brisbane, Queensland.

 

Queensland’s extensive floods, impressive response and recovery programs, and current flood mitigation projects provide excellent learning which can be applied across Australia. To ensure the conference was relevant at national as well as individual state and territory levels it was guided by a Program Advisory Committee with representatives from every state and territory.

 

The theme for this conference was “Building a Flood Resilient Australia“, which focussed on Building Resilient Communities and Flood Resilient Buildings and Infrastructure.

 

This conference attracted over 365 practitioners involved in floodplain risk management. Attendees include Commonwealth, State and Local Government elected representatives and staff, researchers and education providers, as well as consultants, engineers, land-use planners, emergency response personnel and community volunteers.

 

The conference program included outstanding Australian and international keynote speakers, over 50 presentations to choose from, a Local Government Councillors’ session, the National Conference Forum, field trips addressing floodplain issues in the Brisbane River catchment, and networking events. There was also a pre-conference workshop conducted by national flood experts on the Tuesday.
