Floodplain Management Australia’s Excellence Awards will publicly recognise the outstanding contribution of FMA organisations and individuals towards promoting wise land use planning, reducing flood impacts, managing flood incidents or restoring communities after a flood event.

The winner of the Annual Floodplain Management Australia - IAG Excellence Award for the Flood Risk Management Project of the Year will be announced at the 2024 National Conference in Brisbane.

This Award will be given to a project that demonstrates the highest level of achievement in areas of flood risk management including:

  • Public Benefit - projects that benefit the safety and/or sustainability of flood prone communities and/or environments;
  • Community Involvement - projects that demonstrate excellence in community engagement and education in floodplain management;
  • Innovative Solutions - projects that involve the development or implementation of innovative floodplain management methods, techniques, or research with demonstrated benefits to floodplain management practice.
     

WHAT IS THE PRIZE?
Winner - $10,000 cash prize to be used for a purpose related to flood risk management or flood risk education plus Crystal Trophy plus Luxury Hamper Highly Commended - A Full Three Day Registration to the 2025 FMA Conference and Pre-Conference Workshops plus Crystal Trophy plus Luxury Hamper. 

 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Nominations are open to any current Full, Associate, Corporate, Professional, Individual or Student FMA Member. The nominated project must directly relate to FRM within Australia and/or New Zealand. The project should have achieved a significant milestone or preferably been completed in the preceding 12 months. Preference will be given to projects which have been fully implemented, for example works completed, planning instrument adopted, engagement plan executed.

 

WHO WILL JUDGE THE NOMINATIONS?
The Award will be judged by the FMA Executive Committee.

 

WHAT ARE THE SELECTION CRITERIA?
Projects will be judged in terms of achieving excellence in any or all of the following criteria:

• The project involved the development or implementation of innovative floodplain management methods, techniques, or research
• The project enhanced understanding or knowledge of best practice flood risk management
• The project actively involved community or stakeholder groups
• The project has increased the public or political profile of flood risk management
• The project is cost effective and sustainable.
